Beginning Ash Wednesday, the Discalced Hermits of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be offering 40 days of Masses, prayers, vigils, fasting, and penances for all those enrolled this Lent.

But are masses offered for the living truly more powerful than those for the dead?

In the case of the deceased in Purgatory, the soul is receiving it passively. Meaning they cannot merit, but the Mass is capable of decreasing their time in Purgatory. They cannot increase their sanctity, the Mass only helps to purify their imperfections.

But with a living person who is still capable of growing in sanctifying grace, that Mass can have an effect of increased grace. So the person could become more Christ-like.
